A school's mobile app — the message reaches the parent on its own
A React Native app for Chinora School: push notifications and real-time updates, live on the App Store and Google Play.
The problem
Communication between the school and parents was spread across Telegram groups: an important announcement sinks under hundreds of messages, and there's no way to tell who read it. Posting to the website doesn't solve it either — a parent has to go and check, so the message only reaches whoever was already looking for it.
The approach
We reversed the direction: instead of the parent looking for information, the information arrives. A push notification appears on the phone's screen with no app to open. We built it on React Native + Expo, because one codebase ships to both platforms — for a school that means avoiding double development and double maintenance. Firebase is the backend: real-time updates and push infrastructure come ready-made, so the school needs neither a server of its own nor someone to run it.
What shipped
- A single React Native codebase for iOS and Android
- Push notifications — announcements land directly on the phone screen
- Content updated in real time through Firebase — no new release required
- Published on the App Store and Google Play, through both stores' review
- A TypeScript-typed codebase
